New World’s

New World’s first weeks haven’t exactly been smooth sailing. With a lot of bugs, bots, and exploits to tackle, it begs the question of whether New World is here to stay in the long run or to go.

New World, Amazon Game Studios’ fantasy MMO, got off to a rough start, to say the least. With the release just over two months ago, there’s been a sharp decline in the game’s player base as it struggles with the bots, bugs, and exploits. Thankfully, the situation has stabilized – for now, at least. Things are not as unplayable as they were before, and the player count, while no nowhere near what it was on launch, are still respectable. Currently, more than 104k users are playing and farming New World gold on Steam. It’s still being weighed down by its “mixed” rating thanks to the downtime and not-so-popular interventions by Amazon, such as shutting down the economy entirely whilst trying to fix the issues that we were talking about. But as it stands, what does New World’s future look like? Is it looking as bright as the sun or filled with uncertainty?

The Post-Launch Experience

During an interview with PCGamesN, the game director of New World, Scot Lane stated that the MMO is currently the studio’s top priority and that when something goes wrong that impacts their players, it would always get their full attention. They then proceeded to talk more about the team’s post-launch plans such as new quests to farm New World gold, how Aeternum may change as New World tries to establish itself as one of the top MMOs around, and the storm of bugs and exploits that they had to fix.

If you’re worried that there’s not going to be any content soon since Amazon is too busy fixing their game, you need not fret. The development of new content won’t be hindered since they’re two separate jobs. For example, the recent Into The Void update was handled by a different team of artists, gameplay engineers, and designers, while the issue that they were having with the in-game coin was designated to engineers who understood that part of the code.

New World’s Game Director Admits They Made Mistakes

Amazon’s priority at this stage is to ensure New World offers the best experience rather than just pushing out new content. As a result, they’ve increased their testing resources and even launched a public test server (PTS) alongside the release of the Winter Convergence Festival which is currently ongoing until January of 2022. Lane admitted that they’ve made some mistakes by moving “too fast” and that they’re still trying to find the balance of quality and speed. Hopefully, Amazon does get better at testing and patching. New World, while clocking in hundreds of thousands of players every day, is yet to become a mainstream title. The blunders they’ve made in the past can be argued as a form of self-sabotage, but at this point, it would be a shame to see New World close down.

Amazon’s Past

Amazon is still relatively new to the game, and while they certainly have the budget to put out a quality game, their past rodeos weren’t exactly memorable in a good way. Remember Crucible? Well, we wouldn’t be miffed if you’ve never heard of it. It was a free-to-play, third-person shooter multiplayer that was published and developed by Relentless Studios, a subsidiary of Amazon Game Studios. It was Amazon’s first-ever major title made by their gaming division. They collabed with WayForward before, but that was only a one-time gig. After being in development since 2014, Crucible was made available for download in 2020. But alas, it received mixed reviews from critics, and the game returned to a closed beta status shortly after its launch. Then, just a few months after that, Relentless Studios announced out of the blue that the development for Crucible would be discontinued.

While the cease of development of Crucible certainly caught the eyes of the public, their other game, Breakaway, didn’t get the same spotlight. Breakaway was going to be a multiplayer brawler and was announced by Amazon in September 2016 on TwitchCon. It was quite the feat – Breakaway combined elements of Rocket League, League of Legends, and Power Stone. The developers then hosted an open alpha version in December of 2016. At that point, Breakaway still didn’t have a release date, but it was expected to come out in late 2019. But then, two years after hosting the open alpha, Amazon stated that the game was on hiatus and would ultimately be canceled.

Final Thoughts

Looking at Amazon Game Studios’ track record, they’re not the type to invest in their games for the long run and would seemingly cut the cord way too early. Thankfully, it looks like they’ve learned from their past mistakes and are gunning to get New World to be one of the best MMOs in the market. With plans to introduce more features and endgame content such as quests to farm New World gold, the future of New World is looking bright as ever – as long as they’re patient with it.
